Extra-Curricular Activities

In addition to our core academic curriculum, Detroit Enterprise Academy provides 5 highly developed specialized courses as electives for all students. These courses include: Media Skills, Art, Gym, Music and Spanish. All students in grades K-8 attend each special course once a week. Each course is instructed by highly-qualified teachers that are extremely knowledgeable and passionate about their classes.

Media Skills — Media Skills is held in the Media Center, which is equipped with 30 “Thin Client” computers and two desktop computers with scanners. Each student has a personal log-in name and password that give them access to the NHA server. The NHA server provides a wide array of educational computer applications such as Microsoft Encarta, Encarta Kids, Graph Club and Timeliner. The server also provides the entire Microsoft Office package under the Microsoft XP operating system. The Technology Specialist instructs every grade level technology lesson. Each lesson is focused on training and instilling computer technology for effective use and understanding to all students. Students learn how to read, research and produce documents using computer resources.

Art — Art provides a great way for students to demonstrate their creativity and learn how ideas express in drawing and painting can transform a society. Students learn the history of art throughout the world, along with studies of influential artists and their work. Art instructor, who is from Detroit, Jamar Lockhart is a very talented artist in his own right. His passion and talent of art is instilled in each one of his students and their work. Students use various media such as paint, ink and charcoal to create beautiful and inspiring work for the whole community to see.

Physical Education — Throughout the history of elementary education, physical education has been a favorite course for many. Our physical education course gives students a chance to release energy through positive physical activity. Students learn the fundamentals, team work and ethics of many sports such as basketball, baseball, volleyball and soccer. Students also learn the importance of maintaining a healthy body, while developing good eating and exercise habits.

Music — Mrs. Gailliard is a young teacher and singer from Detroit. Her love for music and singing is evident throughout every moment of her music class. Students learn the history of music and the influence it has on every aspect of our society. They also perform educational songs positive meaning. Students with a talent and passion for singing have the opportunity to express themselves and learn how to cultivate their talents. The art of instrumentation is explored and students have the chance of learning how to read musical notes and play instruments such as the recorder and drums.

Spanish — Fully integrated in the daily curriculum, our Spanish course allows students to learn an alternate means of communication, while expressing the importance of global communication.
